Nautitech Open 40 (2016) 'Pride'
She comes complete with a bimini over the helm position for shade from the Caribbean sun. The Nautitech Open 40 in Antigua has a new, innovative design that brings comfortable living and excellent performance together.
As well as the Sail magazine best boat award, the Open 40 was also named Cruising World best multihull cruiser for 2016.
The saloon on our Nautitech Open 40 in Antigua opens seamlessly into the cockpit, providing a huge living area whether under sail or at anchor. A hard bimini covers the cockpit, and an individual bimini covers the helm position on starboard (there is an additional helm to port). Sailing performance is enhanced by:
- High aspect rudders and high aspect sails
- Self-tacking jib
so you get all the fun of a fast, close winded cat, comfortably sailed by two people, but with the living space you would expect in a 45 footer!
Drop-down panels allow you to air-condition the entire cockpit at anchor (and the rest of the interior of course). “Pride” seats eight people with ease at the cockpit table, and you can enjoy panoramic views throughout the cockpit and saloon.
A cruising cat has always been a great boat to charter; the Nautitech Open 40 adds the essential ingredient of simple, spectacular sailing as standard.
So, take “Pride” on your next yacht charter with Horizon in Antigua!
For sailors and non-sailors alike
If you have members of your party who just want the stable platform and space of a catamaran, but there are others who want a boat that is rewarding to sail, then look no further. The concept of the “Open 40” is to give one huge living space, which is seamlessly provided between the cockpit and saloon. Inside or out, the visibility is fantastic.
Below decks are 4 doubles, a single, two heads and showers, and a galley/saloon with panoramic vistas. The cockpit boasts both a recliner, and a cockpit table that drops to make a day bed, as well as plenty of other seating. Add a helm position ( each with its own bimini) on each hull, so the skipper and crew are ‘in the same space’ and you have the perfect recipe for convivial sailing.
The sailors in the group will appreciate sailing at 40 degrees apparent up wind, and double digit speeds off the wind. Sailors love the twin helm positions, as you are able to see the complete sail plan, adjust sail trim easily, all the while getting feedback from the high aspect rudders, and being in touch with the wind and sea conditions – much more akin to sailing a monohull.
This light displacement cat really is fun to sail, and with a self tacking jib, you can do it fully crewed, or short handed.
The clincher is this: Having engine controls at each helm, means no shouting when docking, as the skipper is always right next to the dock that he/she is coming alongside. This cat won Sail magazine and Cruising World Boat of the year awards for good reason.
The Nautitech Open 40 construction is first class; different density foam cores are used, in combination with specific laminate specifications depending on the application and loading in different parts of the structure.
When comparing a typical coach roof helm position versus the Nautitech Open 40 outboard helm position, the following should be considered. With twin helms on the hulls (with a bimini as standard over the starboard helm on the Horizon spec, and an optional one on the port side), you are driving the boat from a position where you have good visibility forward and aft, and you are able to see all four corners of the boat.
The “Open” 40 name relates to the Voisard- Lombard vision of a sailing/living space unlike any other. The saloon has a forward facing galley, twin drawer fridge, and a saloon table to seat 6, with integrated navigation station. Two large coach roof hatches provide ventilation at anchor (along with two fans, and air conditioning as standard on the Horizon spec).
Other features to maximise your comfort include:
- Fusion stereo system with Bluetooth & USB
- Garmin Autopilot
- Garmin Chart Plotter
- Dinghy with outboard motor
Sailing the Open 40
Then you go sailing! A fathead main ( which does not have to be clipped and unclipped from the track) is hoisted effortlessly with the (standard Horizon spec) electric winch, and as you bear off, the solent jib is unfurled and sets beautifully on its self tacking track. In 7.5 knots of wind, single handed, without touching a sheet, the cat tacks through 105 degrees and never drops below 3.6 knots during the tack.
Our Nautitech Open 40 in Antigua is a very well thought out catamaran, with remarkable turn of speed, handling to match, and layout options to make her very appealing to private purchasers and charter management alike. This is a yacht to get truly excited about.
