Silent Wings at the Antigua Charter Yacht Show!

December 21, 2014

Comments Off on Silent Wings at the Antigua Charter Yacht Show!

Horizon recently enjoyed the 53rd Antigua Charter Yacht Show at Falmouth & English Harbours, Antigua – from  5 –  10 December 2014.  Featuring 100 registered yachts, there was a wide selection of stunning catamarans and monohull sail boats ranging in size from 50 feet and up, all in the historic Dockyard at English Harbour. Visitors to the show also got to see super yachts, both power and sail, which was great fun!

The Welcome Party was held at the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel in the historic English Harbour, with a theme of “Caribbean Evening Under the Stars”.   Starting with a cocktail Reception with buffet supper, followed by live entertainment by a dancing troupe and DJ music.  Everybody enjoyed this fantastic opportunity to catch up with industry colleagues in wonderful setting!

Our crewed yacht Silent Wings was located in the Nelsons Dockyard in English Harbour and had prime position amongst the larger fleet.  Sally and Steve were ready to welcome brokers onboard, and to show off this lovely sailing yacht that is based in the Grenadines.

On Tuesday evening the dockyard boat hop brought the place alive with yachts open for visiting brokers to enjoy drinks and canapés.  Silent Wings hosted a Grenada themed cocktail party with rum, spices and chocolate to offer to the brokers.  Goodie bags to take home included local Grenadian flavours & spices.

A fun evening was had by those who stopped by to nibble on Sally’s delightful dips and sample Steve’s strong rum punch!  Jacqui Pascall, co-owner of Horizon Grenada had a great time answering questions about Grenada and the Grenadines, and it certainly didn’t take much encouragement for everyone to sample the fantastic Grenada chocolate displayed!

Parang music

photo thanks to www.hotellaurena.com

The 36th Annual Carriacou Parang Festival is coming up soon, each year it is a fun family celebration just before Christmas!  This year it runs from the 20-22 December 2013.

Parang is a popular folk music originating from Trinidad and Tobago, brought to the Caribbean region by Venezuelan migrants who were primarily of Amerindian and African heritage.  Today it is popular form of Carolling, as singers and performers travelled from house to house and play different instruments, including a cuatro  (small guitar) and maracas, tambourines, mandolin, marimbolas and so on. Performers are joined by neighbours and are rewarded with local seasonal drinks such as sorrel juice.

On Friday, 20 December, the Carriacou Parang Festival opens with a “Sea Food Fest”, the annual Grenadian General Insurance Company’s Hosanna Carol Singing, along with the band “Zest” plus other local performances – all taking place at the Paradise Beach in L’Esterre. “Parang Bacchanal Saturday” features Patrice Roberts from Trinidad, along with a host of local artists. On Sunday there will be a battle of the bands as Parang bands come face to face at the Hillsborough Tennis Court all fighting to dethrone reigning champ “Boys from Camoon”.

Learn more about on the Parang Festival website – what a wonderful way to begin your Christmas celebrations!

Fun Onboard Your Southern Caribbean Yacht Charter!

November 30, 2013

Comments Off on Fun Onboard Your Southern Caribbean Yacht Charter!

A yacht charter vacation in the Southern Caribbean offers a range of activities to appeal to the whole family,  from relaxing and visiting on-deck to various water sports and a wide range of land-based adventures as you enjoy travelling through the different islands!

For guests keen to top up their tans, our beautiful yachts offer space to lounge, where sun worshippers can soak up the rays whilst engrossed in a good book or taking a leisurely dip in the cool sea.

Snorkelling  is a hugely popular part of most charter holidays – bring your own or rent a few sets before you depart to allow you to discover the incredible underwater vistas and stunning sea life below the surface! Explore delicate coral reefs or swim with the sea turtles, we will share our top snorkel sites with you. One of our absolute favourites is the Tobago Cays Marine Park, a protected group of small islands that is one of the most beautiful, breathtaking places in the world – and you can only get there by boat!  Snorkel with sea turtles

If you love the idea of a luxury yacht charter holiday but you don’t know how to sail you can take advantage of adding a professional skipper to your charter – this allows you to learn as much or as little as you like about the aspects of sailing, and your skipper will take responsibility for managing all of the aspects of cruising under sail or by motor, anchoring, mooring, etc.

You can also plan a learning vacation! The emphasis is on learning how to sail, through hands-on experience, in a beautiful part of the world. Mornings will be spent learning and practicing new skills. In the afternoons you will set sail with the backdrop of spectacular beaches and islands of the Grenadines, refining these newly learned skills along the way. Once anchored for the afternoon, there will be free time to spend exploring, snorkeling, fishing, and relaxing…

Explore this stunning part of the world while earning American Sailing Association 101,103 and 104 (Basic Keelboat, Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat) certifications. Over the course of a week you will gain the knowledge, experience and certifications to charter sailboats anywhere in the world, and embark on your own sailing adventure!

Diving often plays a large part in a charter holiday. Grenada is a world-famous dive destination, boasting a wide range of dive sites including the first Underwater Sculpture Park as well as the largest wreck in the Caribbean – the cruise liner “Bianca C” which sank off St George’s in 1961. There is exceptional diving throughout the Grenadines, much of it drift diving and for more experienced divers so we highly recommend the use of one of the local dive shops for “rendezvous” diving. Rental dive equipment can be arranged for your charter.

A kayak is a great way to explore anchorages and beaches – and also perfect for nature lovers in locations such as the mangroves in Tyrrel Bay, Carriacou or exploring the Tobago Cays. Singles rent for only US$125 per week, doubles US$140 per week.

stand up paddleboard at sunset

You can also rent one of our stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) for only US$175 per week. Ideal for exploring quiet beaches and coves, not only is it a great workout for the core muscles but it is also very therapeutic & relaxing!  Ask us about availability to add one to your charter booking.

Fishing can be a fun and important part of both the entertainment and the culinary aspect of your charter. There is nothing quite like reeling in a fish then later that day smelling it searing on the grill! Have fun introducing local fruit and vegetables found in small market stalls to your meal. The chance of catching a yellow fin tuna or Wahoo is excellent as the clean Southern Caribbean waters are known for superb fishing opportunities… or enjoy trawling for dinner as you sail!  Fishing rods can be rented at the Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada base for US$25 per week.

All of our yachts are equipped with tenders that can whisk you to an island beach for a private picnic, or into shore for shopping  & dining in one of the charming, friendly coastal towns. Custom itineraries can be arranged to include the ports of call and land activities that guests most desire. Depending on guest preferences and destination, land options may include rain forest hikes, swimming in waterfalls, bird watching, eco-tours, garden tours, historic sites and so much more.

Imagine your dream holiday – a day of splashing and exploring, followed by laughing together and lounging in the warm evening breezes whilst dining alfresco.  And don’t forget some romantic star gazing in the crystal clear skies – away from the hustle and bustle of large cities, there is very little light pollution so the skies are awash with constellations!

Stunning Sunset at Fort Matthew, St. George’s, Grenada!

November 7, 2013

Comments Off on Stunning Sunset at Fort Matthew, St. George’s, Grenada!

We recently enjoyed a sunset bike ride around the Fort Matthew area, then returned to the Fort bar on the lower levels to grab a cold beer.  We climbed up to the highest point with our drinks just as the sky was taking on the most glorious blushes of colour, and the views across St George’s, Grand Anse and Morne Rouge towards the southern tip of the Grenada were just astonishing.  Fort Matthew is a great place to visit during the day, a very interesting and beautifully structured fort which is fascinating for historians, nature lovers, and tourists.  Visitors will enjoy journeying through the ruins and tunnels, then cold drinks and hot meals can be ordered from the bar, including cocktails, smoothies and the freshly prepared dishes range from bakes to fried chicken or fish.

Fort Mathew was originally constructed as the main barracks for nearby Fort Frederick.  The bar makes use of several arched rooms and has charming chairs and padded benches created from old barrels, as well as plastic lawn chairs for when you have a larger group.  The lighting is low, and helps to show off the masonry and the original artefacts tucked in the corners on display.

To get to the Fort Matthew, go up the hill beyond the Botanical gardens and past the Grenada SPCA.  At the large roundabout at the top of the hill, turn right onto the St. Paul’s main road until you get to the White Gun turnoff (old canons are mounted and painted white) where you take a very sharp right turn and follow the road leading up to Morne Jaloux. The parking is in the yard adjacent to Fort Frederick, which means you take the second entrance and bear right.  There is usually  a security guard at the entrance to point the way if you are not sure of where to go.

Let us help you find hidden treasures like the Fort Matthew Bar, as you plan your next sailing holiday to remember in the Southern Caribbean!

Search the Sky on your next Caribbean Yacht Charter

October 25, 2013

Comments Off on Search the Sky on your next Caribbean Yacht Charter

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson went on a camping trip. After sharing a good meal and a bottle of Petrie wine, they retire to their tent for the night.

At about 3 AM, Holmes nudges Watson and asks, “Watson, look up into the sky and tell me what you see?”

Watson said, “I see millions of stars.”

Holmes asks, “And, what does that tell you?”

Watson replies, “Astronomically, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Theologically, it tells me that God is great and we are small and insignificant. Horologically, it tells me that it’s about 3 AM. Meteorologically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Holmes?”

Holmes says, “It tells me that someone has stolen our tent.”

Yes, the old ones are the best! We do have a serious point to make though. Many of us are not able to see the stars and planets because we live in or near areas where light pollution inhibits our ability to observe the night sky. While you are out on your Horizon Yacht Charter however, you have a great opportunity to see the clear night sky which everyone finds fascinating.

If you ever tried to find Cassiopeia, the North Star or the Big Dipper, I have something that you’re going to love. There are some apps available for your phone and tablet which will shed light on your night sky. They’re not new apps, but might be new to you. I installed the free Google Sky Map on my Android tablet recently and it is fabulous. All you do is run the app and hold the tablet in front of you, your screen displays the sky with all the stars, planets and other celestial bodies labeled. It even allows you to search the sky and points you in the right direction to find your target.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6znyx0gjb4

I haven’t tried them all but I’ve read that Sky Safari is one that is available for both Android and iOS. So install one before your next Horizon Yacht Charter and you’ll know what’s out there.

Happy sailing!
