Comments Off on Stunning Sunset at Fort Matthew, St. George’s, Grenada!
We recently enjoyed a sunset bike ride around the Fort Matthew area, then returned to the Fort bar on the lower levels to grab a cold beer. We climbed up to the highest point with our drinks just as the sky was taking on the most glorious blushes of colour, and the views across St George’s, Grand Anse and Morne Rouge towards the southern tip of the Grenada were just astonishing. Fort Matthew is a great place to visit during the day, a very interesting and beautifully structured fort which is fascinating for historians, nature lovers, and tourists. Visitors will enjoy journeying through the ruins and tunnels, then cold drinks and hot meals can be ordered from the bar, including cocktails, smoothies and the freshly prepared dishes range from bakes to fried chicken or fish.
Fort Mathew was originally constructed as the main barracks for nearby Fort Frederick. The bar makes use of several arched rooms and has charming chairs and padded benches created from old barrels, as well as plastic lawn chairs for when you have a larger group. The lighting is low, and helps to show off the masonry and the original artefacts tucked in the corners on display.
To get to the Fort Matthew, go up the hill beyond the Botanical gardens and past the Grenada SPCA. At the large roundabout at the top of the hill, turn right onto the St. Paul’s main road until you get to the White Gun turnoff (old canons are mounted and painted white) where you take a very sharp right turn and follow the road leading up to Morne Jaloux. The parking is in the yard adjacent to Fort Frederick, which means you take the second entrance and bear right. There is usually a security guard at the entrance to point the way if you are not sure of where to go.
Usually reached by sea, Bequia (pronounced beck-way) is an enticing blend of old and new and covers only 7 square miles. There are just 5000 permanent residents – many of them expats – which creates a laid-back atmosphere and charming inhabitants to welcome you to a surprisingly diverse range of attractions, shops and restaurants.
The first stop of any visit should be Port Elizabeth, a bustling little town with a proper heart to explore, not just a line of stalls along the bay. As promised, there is a wide selection of restaurants, from local food to fine dining, including French cuisine, French – Creole, and even Mexican food! In the colourful stores visitors can see the traditions that have been kept alive on the island in the work of the artisans, in particular the famous model boats, which can be made to order and are all hand-painted. Shops featuring local art and handicrafts are set beside lovely little cafés and friendly bars so that you can sit with a cool drink, snack or locally made ice cream and enjoy the view whilst you plan your next steps. We enjoyed this charming blog about a recent visit to the boat builders on Bequia.
Don’t forget to visit Spring Bay or Friendship Bay for low key relaxation. Spring Bay is quite secluded with a picturesque location and is generally calm for snorkelling, while Friendship Bay is easier to get to and has more restaurants and bars so you don’t have to bring a picnic! There are several bays & beaches to choose from, whether you want to snorkel, swim or just get a bit of sun.
Hiking is very popular on the island and there are some really exciting trails, as well as more sedate walks. You may aim to take in the striking views from the top of Mount Peggy, where on a clear day you can see all the Grenadines islands down to Grenada! You may prefer hiking through lush vegetation to experience a stunning views, or an almost-deserted cove for a cool swim, or discover the exotic wildlife & birds, such as sea turtles at The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary! Click here for a wikiloc map of a short hike up to Mt Pleasant, about 1.5 hours and some really great views:
Special note: the dates have been announced for the next Bequia Mount Gay Music Festival – it is scheduled for the 23-26 of January 2014, with the Mustique Blues Festival falling on the 24th… don’t miss it!

The highly anticipated Vision Series from Bavaria has finally hit the US shores and will proudly be on display at this year’s Annapolis Sail Boat Show, taking place later this week (October 4-8).
The latest from Farr for Bavaria is the new design for the Vision Series. The Vision 46, is an owners layout with 2 double cabins and 2 heads and showers. Other layouts are available. An asymmetric cockpit layout allows the port side to be a generous sun lounger at anchor, and in keeping with what you would expect from Farr, and what we have witnessed already in the Cruiser range, the new Vision 46 promises to be a capable shorthanded passage maker with a good turn of speed and close winded. For the full spec, please click here.
Recently nominated by SAIL magazine in their prestigious annual ‘Best Boat’s competition, The Vision 46 is a worthy contender and a hot favourite to take home the coveted prize.
Already available to charter for day sails, weekends or week long charters on the Chesapeake, we are also taking bookings for the Vision 46 from our BVI base. Available from November 1, 2012, early charter bookings are looking strong and we anticipate a busy season ahead. Check out our rates here for further information and to book!
And if you are attending the Annapolis Boat Show and would like to book an appointment to meet with our Sales Team, to discuss purchasing a yacht for either private use or to put into our charter fleet, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will ensure to schedule in some time for you.
Comments Off on New Children Arriving Soon – at the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park!
New Circle of Children at the First Underwater Scultpure Park in Grenada
Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada are proud to announce their sponsorship of a new Child in the Underwater Sculpture Park! The new sculpture is one of 26 in a replacement piece in the famous Circle of Children. This piece has become an iconic image, recognised world-wide due to media coverage in Diving and Travel publications.
In 2007 Moliniere Bay became home to the World’s First Underwater Sculpture Park created by Jason De Caires Taylor, covering an area of 800sq metres. The first of sixty-five sculptures were originally made and placed on the sea bed by Jason using his own limited funds, limited in size and weight as each piece was brought to the site by dive boat and manhandled into the water!
What a fabulous place to stop on your yacht charter holiday with Horizon, either to dive or snorkel… the natural reef at Moliniere is from 8-22 metres in depth which is now regenerating and has interesting topography and marine life… and the sculptures are scattered around the bay, placed between 1-2 metres and 7-8 metres in depth. The benefits of the Sculpture Park are both in the attraction and entertainment of visitors to our beautiful Island, and this series of artificial structures has provided a new base for marine life to proliferate. Additionally, the sculptures were designed to create a diversion from other areas of coral reef currently endangered by overuse from water activities, creating a protected area for sea life which has allowed the natural coral reefs in the area a chance to regenerate. Coral reefs attract wide range of marine life, such as colourful fish, sea turtles, sea urchins, & sponges and also provide protected spaces for sea creatures to breed or take refuge. The wonderful, colourful growths you can see on the installations are constantly changing and endlessly fascinating.
Grenada Underwater Sculpture Coral Growth
The first sculptures were constructed mainly of cement, which has been damaged by the conditions of the seas, and despite attempted repairs the Circle of Children in particular has suffered damage and collapsed in places. The replacement 26 Children are currently being built, using more durable materials, including a more substantial interlocking marine-grade concrete base, ph neutral micro silica, and fibreglass reinforcing. The entire piece will weigh roughly 5200 kilograms (11,464 pounds)… this should provide a long-term solution for both marine life and visitors to the site!
The Underwater Sculpture Park in Grenada has become well-known through media coverage and interviews, and Jason De Caires Taylor is currently working on two documentaries, with National Geographic and the Discovery Channel! We’ll keep you updated to when the new sculpture will arrive for installation, and by posting your own photos and videos on our facebook page you can help share the fantastic transformations of coral and sea life on and around the Circle of Children when you visit this wonderful, ever-changing feature of the Underwater Sculpture Park!
Earlier this year, Horizon Yacht Charters were thrilled to discover that the Bavaria 45 had been awarded the Best Boats 2012 Winner: The Bavaria Cruiser 45 (Cruising Monohull Under 50ft) by Sail Magazine! Since the recession began in 2008, Bavaria has been reorganized under new ownership, and is once again catching the attention of the U.S. market with their new boats designed by Bruce Farr and BMW Group DesignworksUSA.
Bavaria Yachts USA will be introducing the latest Farr design in the Cruiser family to the U.S. market this fall . The new Cruiser 50 is the latest Cruiser model to emerge from the Bavaria/ Farr Yacht Design/ BMW Group DesignWorksUSA partnership, and is available through Horizon Yacht Charters as the Caribbean Dealer and USA importer of these award-winning yachts. The Cruiser 50 displays an exciting combination of both style and strength. With forty Cruiser 50s already sailing the world’s oceans, Bavaria Yachts USA and Horizon Yacht Charters are excited to introduce this model to the US market this Fall.
The innovative features of the Cruiser range are extended beautifully in the Cruiser 50, and with an actual LOA of 51 feet and clever use of deck space, the cockpit has feel typically found on most 55-60 foot boats! When the signature transom-wide swim platform is lowered, this massive outdoor living space and straight-through access to the water and dinghies is something to behold.
Natural light floods the interior giving a wonderful sense of space and freedom, thanks to the 17 opening hatches and 12 ports. An integrated salon and wrap-around galley have been introduced, and these unique features create an open, yet intimate, space for relaxing or entertaining.
Bavaria Cruiser 50 Saloon and Galley
With the brilliant Farr Yacht Design, including a twin-rudder system unique to the cruising class, you get striking up-wind and off-wind performance, as well as fingertip control on this impressively big and strong boat.
The Bavaria Cruiser 50 can be configured to three, four or five cabins, with three or four heads and showers to suit you. With the interiors available in bosse mahogany, oak or teak, and with 11 styles of upholstery to choose from, this spacious and ergonomic yacht can be customized to your individual tastes and requirements.
Of course you can always come down to Grenada to charter a sailing holiday in the Southern Caribbean on our brand new Bavaria 45 to get a taste of the Farr Design for yourself! Click here to see our fleet.
Comments Off on Meet Our Team at Horizon Grenada! Part One…
Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada is proud to have a fantastic team, which allows us to provide guests with unbeatable customer service. Recently we asked of our team to share some of their favourite things so you can get to know them a bit!
Jacqui Pascall is originally from Shropshire in the United Kingdom, and acts as our Reservations Manager & Financial Controller. Jacqui is one of the co-founders of Horizon Grenada and has been with them since day 1 over 10 years ago. Jacqui’s favourite anchorage is the fabulous Tobago Cays, and she loves spending a day off listening to live music (preferably a cover of Bob Marley!) at a Hog Island lime if she isn’t out and about walking her dog, doing yoga or going diving! Jacqui loves seeing everything come together at Horizon, with satisfied clients having enjoyed a fabulous sail in the Grenadines… A team effort from start to finish!
James Pascall is Horizon Grenada’s second co-founder and Director and comes from Slindon, near Chichester – the birth place of Cricket. James loves focussing on the logistics of Horizon’s operations. His nickname is Papa or the Old Cheese, and is always on the move, hashing or riding his bicycle. James frequently rides over Grand Etang, on his way to a hash or just to visit friends! His most memorable day out was a recent adventure that found him hiking up Diamond Rock off the North of the Island. His favourite song is Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd and if you were to coax him into an impromptu “party piece’ he’d reward you with singing or juggling. Given his choice of anchorages, James would always pick Isle de Ronde, also to the North of Grenada!
Bernadette Noel keeps everything going smoothly for our clients as the Customer Service Manager, and has been with Horizon for 8 1/2 years. She loves working with our tight-knit team and knowing that her customers are satisfied. Bernadette is from Westerhall on the south east coast of Grenada. Her nickname is Bern or B, and she loves Lasagna. Bernadette can often be found cycling or hiking in her spare time, and plans to visit her favourite anchorage – Petite Saint Vincent – again soon!
Candelle Thomas is from Grand Anse, Grenada and joined Horizon a year ago as the Sales & Accounts Assistant. Candelle loves the added benefit of going sailing while working with Horizon! Candelle spends her down time reading or practicing playing the Steel Pan, and loves hiking up Mount Carmel Waterfall and Grand Etang Trails. You will always get her dancing to Rise to the Occasion by Sizzla Kalonji!
Curtis Licorish is one of our maintenance cleaners here at Horizon, and has been with us for 7 years. Originally from Marigot, St John’s Parish on Grenada, Curtis’ favourite part of working here is the social aspect of the team. Curtis enjoys fishing and hunting in his spare time, and his favourite dish is West Indian Fish Broth.
Juliet Nash is originally from Bylands, St Andrews Parish in Grenada and has been working as our interior cleaner for Horizon Grenada for 10 years. Juliet is a big fan of the late Whitney Houston, with ‘I Look to You’ being her top track, and loves the Grenadian national dish of Oil Down… If you catch Juliet in the right mood at a gathering she might be coaxed into reciting poetry for the group, and spends her down time reading.
Next week we will be introducing some more members of the team… while we were chatting we had so many people mention Grenada’s national dish we thought we should share the recipe for Oil Down, a simple hearty one pot meal of saltbeef or saltfish and vegetables!
Oil Down Ingredients:
250 grams salted meat (pig tail, pork, meat or chicken)
250 grams salted fish

Add layer of chopped dasheen
Put dumplings on top layer

Comments Off on Horizon Yacht Charters (Grenada) Ltd hires John Pirovano as Yacht Sales & Service Manager!
Grenada, West Indies – February 2012 – Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada (Horizon Yachts) – has hired John Pirovano as their new Yacht Sales & Service Manager.
John will be responsible for strengthening and developing three key areas of business:
Yacht Sales. Horizon is the Caribbean dealer for Bavaria Yachts and a dealer for Fountaine Pajot Catamarans. In 2011 Horizon Grenada became the dealer for Sea Ray and Meridian motor yachts for the Southern Caribbean, covering St Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent, Grenada and Trinidad & Tobago. John will be responsible for developing sales across the region through a network of sub agents in each country.
Yacht Management. Horizon Grenada opened an office at Port Louis Marina in 2010 with the objective of developing their private yacht management business in this brand new, first class marina facility. John will be the first point of contact for private yachts seeking assistance and management and will continue to develop this growing side of the business. It is hoped that more and more yacht owners will see the benefit of locating their yacht at Port Louis in Grenada: the gateway to the Grenadines.
Yacht Brokerage. There is currently no properly established yacht brokerage company in Grenada. Brokerage will work hand in hand with management where Horizon will take care of a yacht while assisting the owner in its sale.
Originally from New Zealand, John has spent most of his working life in the yachting industry. John’s early sailing career developed from national competition to racing with New Zealand’s best. The early eighties bought John to America where he worked on large mega yachts before being lured into maxi yacht racing. Six years of international competition followed on famous yachts such as Bumblebee 4, Kialoa 4, Condor and Nirvana. This boat broke many blue water records including the Newport – Bermuda and Fastnet race records in ’82 and ’85 respectively.
With marriage in sight, John moved ashore to work initially for Hood Sail makers in Marblehead Mass, before moving into the Marina service and management industry. An opportunity then arose to assist in the establishment of a new mega-yacht service facility for Palmer Johnson in Savannah Georgia, leading to a position of Sales Manager, with global travel in pursuit of service work to the fast growing mega-yacht fleet.
Although never straying to far from his boating routes, John spent several years in the high speed ferry industry developing new business and operations in North America and the Caribbean. In 2010 John was enticed back to the sunshine and trade winds of the Caribbean with an offer of a job in Grenada.
John Pirovano has honed his skills with over 30 years’ experience in the Marina and Yachting Industry with roles varying from yacht sales & service to marina operations & management. His Southern Caribbean role will benefit from his international experience and help him to provide top-notch service to clients with knowledgeable, hands-on advice. Horizon Grenada is very happy to welcome him on board! John Pirovano can be contacted at email@example.com or tel: +1473 536 4956
