New Yacht Clearance Office in Tyrrel Bay, Carriacou

Yacht Clearance in Grenada

On 9 August 2013 a new Yacht Clearance Office opened in Tyrrel Bay, Carriacou. Yachts needing to clear in or out of Grenada in Carriacou can now anchor in Tyrrel Bay and complete clearance there. The clearance facilities in Hillsborough will remain open for a short duration and after this time all yachts will be re-directed to Tyrrel Bay. The clearance office is a brand new, purpose built building located at Carriacou Marine Boatyard and Yacht Club (formerly Tyrrel Bay Haul Out) on the south side of the bay.

Tyrrel Bay has a major advantage for yachts stopping to clear in the fact that the bay is considerably better sheltered than Hillsborough. Winter swells can make Hillsborough a very uncomfortable and potentially dangerous anchorage to land from. Tyrrel Bay has always been the natural stopping place for most yachts in Carriacou, and relocating the clearance office there will make the process faster and easier. Tyrrel Bay is a sheltered anchorage within easy reach of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and dive shops.

Carriacou Marine, the new location for the Customs and Immigration office, offers many services including haulout, dockage, dinghy dock, minimart, café/bar and a chandlery stocking a good selection of Island Water World goods plus a 1 day delivery service for special items. Call 443 6292 for further information or visit their website www.carriacoumarine.com, email info@carriacoumarine.com.

Customs and Immigration office opening hours are normally 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday (closed for lunch from 12pm to 1pm) and 9am to 2pm at weekends and on public holidays, Telephone +1 473 443 7273 .

MAYAG President, Anita Sutton also issued an update on an exciting project which will launch soon. Anita said, “The Government of Grenada, Grenada Customs, Immigration Department, Grenada Ports Authority, Grenada Board of Tourism and MAYAG (Marine and Yachting Association Grenada) are working together on a project funded by the Caribbean Development Bank to ease yacht movement. The implementation of the SailClear online clearance system is under way and a team is looking at how we can progress towards a single yachting space making Grenada more attractive to visiting yachts”.

World Arc Visits Grenada!

Comments Off on World Arc Visits Grenada!

World Arc comes to Grenada! Horizon Yacht Charters were thrilled to welcome the crews from World Arc to Grenada this week!  Starting from Saint Lucia (or Australia, for a half-rally), World ARC is an incredibly well-organised event – travelling a total of 26,000 Nautical Miles on a tradewind circumnavigation with a team in every port to ensure a warm welcome.  Participants in World ARC enjoy a mix of cruising in company and free time to explore – the fleet keeps up a regular pace together and join in the shore-side activities as a group, while staying with the best weather as they travel.  The group is made up of families with children, retirees or those on a ‘grown up gap year’ – all are welcome and accommodated for. With a dedicated rally team ensuring everyone makes the most of their time ashore, while providing peace of mind at sea – truly the voyage of a lifetime!

While in Grenada there are a series of events, including a Prize giving Function at the Victory Bar & Grill, Port Louis and an Island Tour, arranged by the Grenada Tourist Board.  The yachts and their crews will be staying about 10 days in Grenada before cruising up the coast and through the stunning Grenadines before meeting up again in St Lucia in mid-April.

James Pascall speaks to the World Arc group at Port Louis Marina, Grenada

James & Jacqui of Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada spent some time with the crews, providing itinerary assistance, mooring advice and an information pack with details on fun things to try in Grenada, like joining the Hash House Harriers (known as drinkers with a running problem!), sharing Horizon’s Wikiloc page for hikers and explorers,  Prickly Bay on a Friday night, De Big Fish on a Saturday, and Hog Island on a Sunday. There were also detailed suggestions for some of the fabulous places to stop, shop and dine along the final leg of their circumnavigation, including Carriacou, Mayreau, Union, Mopion…   If you click on the photo a larger resolution will pop up…do take note of the text on James’ presentation – you can see why they are all listening so intently! Ahh, yes – there is truly no better way to explore the beautiful Southern Caribbean and Grenadines than on a yacht!

James Pascall Presenting to World Arc Crews

"...one gas station and 200 rum shops!"

All yachts in all WCC events are fitted with a remote tracking device and each event has a dedicated website with a ‘Fleet Viewer’ where family and friends ashore can follow the fleet’s progress and obtain information on individual yachts. After being away for so long they will be exhilarated with their adventures and ready to share some stories!  Read about their recent tour of Grenada on their blog

You can learn more about the World Arc and other World Cruising Club events on their website!

New Children Arriving Soon – at the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park!

New Circle of Children at the First Underwater Scultpure Park in Grenada

New Circle of Children at the First Underwater Scultpure Park in Grenada

Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada are proud to announce their sponsorship of a new Child in the Underwater Sculpture Park! The new sculpture is one of 26 in a replacement piece in the famous Circle of Children. This piece has become an iconic image, recognised world-wide due to media coverage in Diving and Travel publications.

In 2007 Moliniere Bay became home to the World’s First Underwater Sculpture Park created by Jason De Caires Taylor, covering an area of 800sq metres. The first of sixty-five sculptures were originally made and placed on the sea bed by Jason using his own limited funds, limited in size and weight as each piece was brought to the site by dive boat and manhandled into the water!

What a fabulous place to stop on your yacht charter holiday with Horizon, either to dive or snorkel… the natural reef at Moliniere is from 8-22 metres in depth which is now regenerating and has interesting topography and marine life… and the sculptures are scattered around the bay,  placed between 1-2 metres and 7-8 metres in depth.  The benefits of the Sculpture Park are both in the attraction and entertainment of visitors to our beautiful Island, and this series of artificial structures has provided a new base for marine life to proliferate. Additionally, the sculptures were designed to create a diversion from other areas of coral reef currently endangered by overuse from water activities, creating a protected area for sea life which has allowed the natural coral reefs in the area a chance to regenerate. Coral reefs attract wide range of marine life, such as colourful fish, sea turtles, sea urchins, & sponges and also provide protected spaces for sea creatures to breed or take refuge. The wonderful, colourful growths you can see on the installations are constantly changing and endlessly fascinating.

Grenada Underwater Sculpture Coral Growth

Grenada Underwater Sculpture Coral Growth

The first sculptures were constructed mainly of cement, which has been damaged by the conditions of the seas, and despite attempted repairs the Circle of Children in particular has suffered damage and collapsed in places. The replacement 26 Children are currently being built, using more durable materials, including a more substantial interlocking marine-grade concrete base, ph neutral micro silica, and fibreglass reinforcing. The entire piece will weigh roughly 5200 kilograms (11,464 pounds)… this should provide a long-term solution for both marine life and visitors to the site!

The Underwater Sculpture Park in Grenada has become well-known through media coverage and interviews, and Jason De Caires Taylor is currently working on two documentaries, with National Geographic and the Discovery Channel! We’ll keep you updated to when the new sculpture will arrive for installation, and by posting your own photos and videos on our facebook page you can help share the fantastic transformations of coral and sea life on and around the Circle of Children when you visit this wonderful, ever-changing feature of the Underwater Sculpture Park!
