Saturday 8th April 2017 saw Grenada’s first International Invitational Track and Field meet at the newly named Kirani James Stadium. Not surprisingly, the tickets for this event sold out fast; in fact tickets for the main pavilion sold out back in early February! Jacqui Pascall – owner operator of Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada – was one of the lucky ones who was invited to join friends and was amongst the crowd cheering on the athletes from home and abroad.
Of course, the biggest cheer went to home grown Kirani James, Grenada’s first Olympic gold medal winner. The Honorable Dr Keith Mitchell (Prime Minister of Grenada) made a brief speech about what a great man Kirani is and what a wonderful credit that he is to his country.
Kirani, who had a humble upbringing in Gouyave (a village on the west coast of Grenada), won his gold medal in the 400m at the 2012 London Olympics. It’s therefore little wonder that the new athletics’ stadium in Grenada was named after him and he has become an inspiration for Grenadians! His old school, Grenada Boys’ Secondary School, recently won the Intercol Athletics Championship – no doubt enthused by their famous ex-student.
Spirits were high throughout Grenada at the weekend, even those who did not manage to get a ticket were in good spirits as they were able to watch the event with live streaming TV. Everyone was happy that Kirani was back home for the event that was putting Grenada on the International athletics map.
During the Invitational various events took place at the same time including long jump, high jump and javelin plus the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. It was a very well organized and successful event. Credit must go to the many people who involved who proved what can be done to promote sports tourism and local sports development in the islands.
We hope that the next Grenadian Olympic gold medalist was inspired to continue to work towards their gold goal!
