Donation to Horizon BVI Staff

A container packed full of household items for our staff is on its way to Tortola thanks to Canadian Patrick Festing-Smith, a 30-year visitor to the BVI and owner of NANUK in our fleet.
Shocked by the devastation caused by Irma, Patrick decided to “stop looking at the damage and try and help these poor people. Some of whom I have known for decades and have now lost everything.”

After a few phone calls and texts to “some of the best Oakville friends a person could possibly have”, Patrick had a fundraising committee, entertainment and a venue.
Magically, even during a busy tour season, Patrick was able to line up Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies, who has sailed on NANUK three times in the BVI; music producer and performer Danny Michel, who has also sailed with Patrick; Ron MacLean, longtime TV host of Hockey Night In Canada; and Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, with some help of Ron’s wife Cari.

Forty eight hours later the committee had completely organized and
sold out a benefit concert raising $20,000 in ticket sales, with even more to come in live and silent auction items and t-shirt sales.
This fabulous evening was held on September 27 just a couple of weeks after the idea was born. “All in all people raved it was the best party of the year. Small, intimate and comedic with Ed and Jim busting our sides with jokes and warming our hearts with amazing tunes,” said Patrick.

Another $7,500 in ‘virtual’ tickets was sold before the event to people who just wanted to help. And by the end of the evening, with auction items and sales of the very popular Irma t-shirts, a total of $55,000 had been raised in one of the tiniest of locations, The Moonshine Cafe in Oakville.
Thanks Patrick! We look forward to having you here in early December to empty the container and hand out the much needed items to our staff!
