This is the fifth time I have done a bareboat charter with Horizon, four times here in the BVI and once in St. Vincent. The staff was great getting it all set up, the boat was in great shape (I’d actually chartered this same boat 3 years ago, and she’d been maintained extremely well) their online briefing and charting materials meant that we were on the boat and out of the marina in an hour. Similarly, when we were done, we were checked out and off the boat very quickly.

Great service from reservation to arrival to departure. The boat was really brand new and a great boat. The operating manual was well put together with pictures and explanations in detail making it easy as a reference. All necessary items were on board. We called once for service assistance as the AC lines had to have the air bled from the lines, was able to get easy help on the phone (provided Lime mobile) and fixed the issue easily, in just a few minutes. Sailing characteristics were good, the boat was solid in the wind and once moving it tracked well. At slow speeds the high freeboard had to be managed with respect to the wind, however that high freeboard gave excellent below deck headroom and accomodations so well worth it. It was a great experience and we would charter with Horizon again!

Horizon and BVI was an excellent choice for our family’s first bareboat sailing experience! We chartered a 42 Lagoon named Casbah III from Horizon Yacht Charters. This Lagoon 42 had a large, full stateroom in Starboard hull and two smaller, full staterooms in Port hull. My wife and I were in one of the smaller rooms, and my adult son was in one of the smaller rooms. My daughter, son-in-law and 2 1/2 year old granddaughter were in the larger room. This boat was PERFECT for our family! The experience with the Horizon Staff and Nanny Cay facilities and other establishments was excellent. The sailing was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed every area we visited – Peter Island, Soper’s Hole, Jost Van Dyke including Foxy’s Taboo and the bubbly pools, Marina Cay and the snorkeling there, The Baths at Virgin Gorda and Cooper Island. I would recommend Horizon and a BVI sailing experience to anyone. It was my first bareboat Captain experience. I have a 38 foot monohull sailboat. For any prospective Captains thinking of doing this for the first time, as long as you prepare well and take full advantage of the videos and manuals Horizon provides, you can do this!

We arrived on the last ferry so it was late. Arriving at the facility and finding our boat was very easy. We appreciated the board at the front of the dock that showed where our boat was. The lights and A/C were on, and it was very inviting. Cara came by the next morning, and we walked through the few items I had questions on that I didn't remember from the video. She was very helpful and knew the boat really well. Cara helped us embark and piloted the boat to the fuel dock where she handed it over. The rest of the trip was wonderful. The boat performed well, and we didn't have any significant mechanical issues.

We have chartered many times from Horizon, most often in the BVI but also Antigua and the Grenadines. Service has always been excellent and we have had no issues with boat equipment to speak of. Any minor issues that we did have over the years (one or two in about 18 years) were handled quickly and our charters were never delayed or interrupted by them. The charter process is seamless, and the staff is invariably friendly and helpful.

A while back, some friends and I got to spend a week onboard the good ship Luna, a 46’ Nautitech catamaran, one of the boats in the Horizon Yacht Charters fleet.  The experience was overwhelmingly positive, and I thought it fit to share my review of the boat, company and charter experience.

First, a bit about me – I have been operating charter vessels in the BVI for the past fifteen years, and spent several years working as a bareboat skipper – you hire a boat and you hire a captain.  Suffice to say that I have chartered a multitude of different boats in the BVI, from many different charter companies.

My week onboard Luna was slightly different; it was myself and some good friends, just vacationing, so not a working week for me.  Having been on board many bareboat charters in the past, my expectations were low.  Bareboats tend to get a bit beaten up and look a bit tatty early on, in my experience – the result of credit card captains not taking the proper care of them, or the management company trying to cut corners in the maintenance.  To say that I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement.  The boat was pristine.  Spotless inside and out, and none of the usual bareboat nicks and scratches I’ve come to expect.  Understand that I run a high-end luxury crewed charter yacht these days, so I have high standards.  I couldn’t find fault.  At all.  The cushions were immaculate.  The towels and bedding new and lacked the usual bareboat mystery stains.  The boat was impeccably maintained.

In addition, the boat was equipped way better than any other bareboat I have ever been on.  Properly stocked with a good assortment of pots and pans, plates, glasses, cutlery etc – enough to actually cook a real meal, should you so desire.  I’m used to a warped pan and maybe a broken spatula on board, but the owners of this boat had spared no expense and kitted her out properly.  Fridge and freezer space galore – way more than we needed for the week.  An ice maker on board, as well as (if you can believe it) a water maker.  Oh, the luxury of hot uninterrupted showers.  A/c was ice cold throughout.

Then I got to take her out and put her through her paces.  I’d never sailed a Nautitech before – this version is the 46’ flybridge, featuring powered roller-furling in-mast mainsail, with a self-tacking jib.  Fully rigged for solo sailing, this boat was an absolute joy to sail.  Every line runs straight to the flybridge helm station, and I single-handed the sailing side of things the whole week.  Easily.  The self-tacking jib was an absolute eye-opener.  Honestly, couldn’t be easier.  As for electronics and nav equipment, she has everything you could possibly want onboard.  Full disclosure here: she’s not a fast boat.  She’s built for comfort and ease of use.  The roller-furling main means no battens in the mainsail, and the self-tacking jib makes for a somewhat baggy bottom profile.  This is not the boat to take racing.  If you want to drift along in ease and comfort, though – I highly recommend it.

All in all, I give her a solid five-star rating, with two additional thumbs up.  Great boat.

As for my dealings with Horizon Charter Yachts, all I can say is that they were extremely professional and competent.  Definitely my best experience ever with a bareboat company.  Emails were quickly replied to, information was given clearly and their manner was friendly and courteous throughout.  Here again, I cannot find fault at all.

All in all, a great week on a great boat, from a great company.  My sincerest thanks.  We’ll be back for sure.

Firstly, thank you for one of the most amazing experiences we’ve had. We did a 7-day charter on Cosette II with Captain Dani as our instructor for ASA101, ASA103, and ASA104. Everything about the trip was perfect. When we arrived, the boat was just as pictured, clean, and well-maintained. We loved our week in BVI and Captain Dani went above and beyond to teach us while also making sure we had fun. She was the real high point of our trip. She was absolutely amazing and we couldn’t imagine a better person to spend 7 days on a boat with and learning from. Not only was she a knowledgeable and fantastic teacher, but she was also so fun and lovely to be around. We couldn’t imagine a better captain/instructor and would recommend her to everyone, any of our future sailing trips will absolutely be with Horizon/Captain Dani. Last week my family and I had the opportunity to spend a week sailing the BVI on the Casbah II. We have been chartering with Horizon for over 20 years and you guys just seem to get better every time.

The complexity of travelling internationally via planes and ferries is at an all-time high but the help, advice and flexibility of your office staff made that manageable. Your boat descriptions and providing the manual in advance helped us get familiar with the boat and make sure we brought just what we needed. The tight check-in and check-out schedule we had to allow maximum boat time in light of the reduced travel options worked flawlessly.

Again, we were on the Hakuna Matata IV (previously Casbah II) and, with the high winds and seas last week, we got to see all she has to offer. Just great sailing for which the BVI is well known. You guys are just the best.

I’d say don’t change and you’re the best and the best doesn’t stand still. I know you will come up with new ways to make our next charter even better. We can’t wait for that time.

Fabulous experience start to finish – Cosette II was a very clean & beautiful boat. Our boat sailed beautifully and was very roomy with four couples – Nanny Cay marina was a perfect beginning and end to the trip with a pool, bath house and restaurant, and store for provisions.

We started sailing 10 years ago and have chartered with other operators in the past. We say this only, so much as to indicate that we have others to which we can compare Horizon. It certainly is not to say that others were poor, but to say that you hold a high standard.

We really appreciated the timely emails prior to our arrival, and your video assets were exceptional. The boat specific videos were very helpful. Getting us off the dock in a timely manner was appreciated and you were very prompt when we returned to the fuel dock. You have mastered responsiveness for sure. The boat is 5 years old and it appeared and functioned as if you just took the wrapper off. Your maintenance staff should be commended for their efforts. We would be delighted to charter from Horizon should we find our way back.

Did Norman’s (Sun), Jost Van Dyke Great Harbor (Mon), Foxy’s Taboo/Little Harbor (Tues.), Leverick Bay in Gorda Sound (W/Th.); Cooper Island Beach Club (Fri.), and back to Nanny Cay (Sat.).

Will have to repeat next year.
