Written By: Cara Brown | Horizon Sailing School Manager

Planning a yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands? Understanding how weather, especially wind, affects your sailing itinerary is key to a safe and exciting adventure. In this guide, our sailing expert Cara Brown shares expert tips for handling windy days, finding sheltered anchorages, and making the most of the BVI’s famous trade winds.

One of the joys of sailing the British Virgin Islands is the steady trade winds that make this region a sailor’s paradise, especially when the Christmas Winds roll in! But when the breeze builds, it helps to know how to adapt your charter itinerary to make your sail the most fun! From smart sailing techniques to sheltered anchorages and performance sailing packages, here’s how to turn windy weather into part of the adventure.

Typical BVI Sailing Weather Conditions

The British Virgin Islands is known for its consistent and reliable sailing conditions. Most of the year, you’ll enjoy easterly trade winds averaging 10–20 knots — perfect for island-hopping and easy line of sight passages between the islands.

How windy does it get when sailing the BVI?

Between December and February, the “Christmas Winds” can sometimes bring stronger breezes (20–25 knots), while summer months tend to be lighter.

How to Sail Safely on Windy Days in the BVI

When the breeze picks up, confident seamanship and the right sail trim will make all the difference. Here are a few professional tips for handling a windy BVI sailing charter:

  1. Reef Early, Sail Happy – “ Line Squalls” can pack 35 knots, in an intense, short downburst of rain, and visibility can diminish rapidly.
    1. What to do?

      1. Note your position and course

      2. Reef your mainsail and headsail early. This keeps the boat balanced and comfortable and it’s always easier to shake out a reef than add one later.

      3. Or start your engine, furl your headsail, motor close hauled so your mainsail does not flog, and unfurl your genoa after the squall has passed, which is often within 15 – 20 mins.
  2. Trim for Control – Ease your traveler to reduce weather helm. If your yacht does not have a traveller, ease the mainsheet.  If it is choppy, have more twist in your sails to give you a wider steering groove.
  3. Sail Off the Wind – Be flexible with your route — sailing slightly off the wind can make the boat faster, steadier, and much more enjoyable. The Sir Francis Drake Channel is usually a smaller sea state than the North shore of Tortola, so navigating anticlockwise is usually favourable.
  4. Plan routes with Downwind Legs – When it’s time to relax and let the wind push you home, Horizon’s Performance Sailing Package can make those downwind passages even more thrilling.
