Crew’s View: A Local’s Must-See & Do List in the BVI!

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches, vibrant local culture, and unforgettable experiences in the Caribbean.

Who better to guide you through the must-see spots than our very own crew who have lived and breathed the islands for over 30 years? Here’s a list of some of our staff’s favorite places in the BVI, offering you a local’s perspective on where to go and what to do while you’re here.

Tortola: The Heart of the BVI

Considering it’s the island where we all live you’d hope we’d know and love it the most! Anil, Joe and Chris have all lived here for most of their lives so it must be something special!

For beach lovers, Tortola has endless options:

  • Quennie and Meriam highly recommend Cane Garden Bay with its calm waters, multitude of beach bars and restaurants, and its more-often-than-not, fabulous sunset. Cane is easily accessible by yacht and has a mooring field, a fuel dock and provisioning options so it’s a great stop on charter.
  • Tiayana and Gabi prefer more secluded spots like Brewers Bay or Smuggler’s Cove. They’re both more off the beaten track, have great snorkelling, and offer an escape from the crowds.
  • Nixon prefers to head east for his beach days and insists that Long Bay Beach on Beef Island is a must, especially for an afternoon of barbequing and socializing with friends and family.

Norman Island & Salt Island: Treasure Troves

Two of the best islands according to Jude are Norman and Salt Island. Both have spectacular underwater environments, with Norman offering great snorkelling at The Caves and Salt being home to one of the best dive sites in the Caribbean, the famous RMS Rhone shipwreck. Although we don’t offer diving, our office at Nanny Cay is conveniently located across from Blue Water Divers who we’ve partnered with for years. They offer various diving packages and snorkel rentals at a discounted rate for Horizon Guests.

Cooper Island: A Food Lover’s Paradise

If you’re looking for an island where you can spend your day unwinding, Sam suggests Cooper Island as your spot! With its eco-friendly beach club, a restaurant, boutique and rum bar it’s a foodie’s paradise and with snorkeling options right off the beach or at Cistern Point, it’s an ideal spot for the whole family.

Virgin Gorda: Stunning Natural Beauty

For those in search of stunning natural scenery, Will and Kim both recommend Virgin Gorda. As a rigger, Will would’ve seen VG from above more than most and Kim lived on Virgin Gorda before moving to Tortola, so she knows the island like the back of her hand. If you’re lucky enough to spend a day on Virgin Gorda as a part of your BVI stay, we’d recommend hiring a car and exploring the spots you can’t reach by boat. For Virgin Gorda recommendations, contact us and we’ll give you our list of favourite spots!

Jost Van Dyke: An Unforgettable Experience

Jalon who insists that his home St Vincent and The Grenadines is the best place in the world, can even admit that Jost Van Dyke is one to remember. This small island is famous for its laid-back atmosphere, world-renowned beach bars, and lively parties. If you’re looking for a fun and energetic place to let loose, this is the spot for you!

Anegada: A Unique Escape

Anegada stands out from the other islands with its flat landscape, endless white-sand beaches, and stunning coral reefs. Courtney and Will say it’s a must-visit as it’s totally different from the rest of the islands in the BVI, making it a truly special place to explore.
