Update on The Grenadines following Hurricane Beryl, July 2024

Hurricane Beryl struck parts of the Caribbean, including our home in St Vincent and the Grenadines in early July 2024. Thankfully, our islands have bounced back and been rebuilt by the dedicated Grenadians who love their home and want to share it with others.

One of our loyal and repeat clients, Alison Tonet, recently visited the Grenadines on our Bali 4.0, Tolkien II and gave us great insight into how the islands have recovered from Hurricane Beryl.

Bequia

The island is back up and running with no visible signs of hurricane damage. It’s a relief to see that the community and businesses have recovered, and everything from the idyllic beaches to the endless forests are looking as vibrant as ever. Bequia’s charm remains intact, and it’s clear that the island has worked hard to restore its beauty and hospitality, making it a wonderful destination to visit again.

Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau

A brand-new breakwater has been constructed, after it was destroyed by Beryl, dramatically improving the bay’s appearance. The calm, clear waters make it a serene spot, and although some of the iconic palm trees are missing, many new ones have been replanted, which will soon restore the area’s lush greenery. The Last Bar Before the Jungle is up and running, offering drinks and snacks in a relaxed setting. Several other establishments are either fully operational or currently being rebuilt, showing a great sign of recovery. The mini-mart is open and well-stocked, adding convenience for visitors. When Alison visited, the place was bustling with energy and life, and in her words “it’s definitely worth the trip.”

Tobago Cays

As always, The Cays are absolutely breathtaking. The crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life make it a perfect destination for snorkeling or just relaxing by the shore. Alison had the pleasure of seeing plenty of turtles swimming alongside them, and the coral reef is in excellent condition. They enjoyed a fantastic meal at Romeo’s, where the food was exceptional, fresh, and full of flavor. Petit Tabac, while still recovering, is a bit of a shadow of its former self, but the palm trees have been replanted, and with time, it will bounce back. Mr. Wonderful continues to offer delicious bread, fresh fish, and his famous banana bread, which is always a treat.

Chatham Bay, Union Island

There are a few makeshift beach bars that have popped up in the area, offering a laid-back vibe and cold drinks. At the far end of the bay, the resort is in the process of being rebuilt, and it’s exciting to hear how much progress has been made. Seckie and Vanessa’s establishment is also under reconstruction, and it’s important to support them as they rebuild. They have always been such a central part of the community, and your support will make a huge difference to them. This area is definitely on its way to recovery, and we’re so happy to see it return to its full glory.

Sandy Lane Marina, Canouan

Alison had a fantastic experience at Sandy Lane Marina, which remains a top choice for cruisers. The facilities are top-notch, and the marina offers a peaceful, secure spot to dock your boat. They paid 120 USD for one night with our 40-foot catamaran, which is very reasonable given the services they provide. They continue to go above and beyond for cruisers, offering excellent amenities, including a well-stocked supermarket, Randy’s, where you can grab just about anything you need. The showers are clean and convenient, and they have a great restaurant where you can relax and enjoy a delicious meal after a day on the water.

As much as we are able to see that the islands have recovered and are back to their high standard, it was comforting to get an outsider’s perspective and know that someone who has frequently returned and is as much in love with The Grenadines as us, found that the islands are just as great as ever. Click here to book a charter with us and explore the islands for yourself!
